NASHVILLE POLICE / TRAFFIC CONTROL INFORMATION
Some Nashville film and photography productions may require police officers or professional traffic control when filming impacts public streets, intersections, vehicles or pedestrian traffic.
The exact requirements depend on your location, production activity and approved traffic-control plan.
WHEN MIGHT POLICE BE REQUIRED?
Police or additional traffic-control personnel may be needed for productions involving:
Street or lane closures
Intermittent traffic control
Driving shots
Picture vehicles
Talent working in a roadway
Busy intersections
Significant pedestrian impacts
Production security
Other activity affecting public safety or traffic
Don't assume production assistants or crew members can stop public traffic. Discuss traffic-control needs during the permitting process so Metro can determine what is required.
HIRING OFF-DUTY NASHVILLE POLICE
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Secondary Employment Unit coordinates off-duty Metro police officers for businesses and organizations that need police services.
Off-duty officers commonly provide traffic control and security.
If an MNPD police vehicle is required, officers must be hired through the Secondary Employment Unit.

WHAT WILL MNPD NEED?
For assignments involving road or lane closures, MNPD may require documentation related to the production's approved permits.
Depending on the assignment, this can include:
Required lane or road closure permits
Details about the production or assignment
Location and working hours
Number of officers requested
Police vehicle requirements
Duties the officers will perform
MNPD reviews the request and determines staffing requirements.
TRAFFIC CONTROL PLANS
The Nashville Department of Transportation + Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) oversees right-of-way permitting and traffic-control requirements.
NDOT requires a traffic-control plan with right-of-way permit submissions. Additional requirements may apply when streets, lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks or bike lanes are affected.

NDOT TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE PERMITS
PLAN EARLY
If your creative involves a driving shot, street closure or intermittent traffic control, bring it up early.
Police staffing, traffic-control plans and right-of-way permits can add both time and cost to a production.
A location that works creatively may not work logistically once traffic volume, intersections, pedestrian activity and required traffic control are considered.
